About Certified Films

Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is a statutory body under the aegis of Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, regulating the public exhibition of films under the provisions of the Cinematograph Act 1952. Films can be publicly exhibited in India only after they have been certified by CBFC.

Every year hundreds of feature films in various languages are produced and released theatrically in our country subject to certification by CBFC. The CBFC provides a comprehensive and detailed language wise breakup of these films for the preceding year (earlier the period under consideration was calendar year which has been amended to financial year since the last 2-3 years) and also segregates data for celluloid and digital prints. With the advent of digitization most films are released digitally with the exception of few who still release their film through physical print.

Data pertaining to Certification of films provides valuable insights into the overall state of film making all over the country and is a pointer to the health & prosperity of the Indian film industry.
